O Brien’s Tower is situated at the top of one of Irelands busiest tourist locations. It suffered from years of water ingress and the structure was beginning to deteriorate. At the beginning of 2019 Mid West Lime were contracted to carry our renovation and upgrade works to the structure. The scope of works included the construction of 1/2km of temporary access road, and a temporary roof and scaffold structure around the building. Demolition works included propping of floors, demolition of a concrete roof structure, outlook tower at roof level and the removal of the stairs from ground to roof level. The refurbishment works included a new concrete roof, a new suspended concrete floor, a new outlook tower clad in lead with a sliding curved glass door, new access stairs to both levels, new windows and doors, new wiring , new floors, rake out pointing and repoint and replaster in a lime mortar. All the castellations were recorded, dismantled, a new lead tray was installed and the castellations were rebuilt.
